Self Portrait Pacaderm

This is amazing, unsettling even. It makes me wonder what animals really see, think and understand. Representation, 3d space, line quality, design. This elephant demonstrates it all with steady precision and concentration. How much of that is trained into them for a peanut and how much is the elephant's intuition and creative skill? Elephants are known for good memory but could it be that it's so good that they can repeat the exact order, style and placement of each brush stroke their handlers show them? Or is there something else. If you look closely, you see "Paya" is concentrating, contemplating the piece. He is considering each brush stroke, each placement, each approach. He does not leave lazy hap-hazard unfinished lines. They're clean and finished. You wouldn't expect that. Why would it matter to an elephant the aesthetic appearance, or any animal for that matter. I doubt they beat the elephants to make every line perfect, but to this elephant it matters. He goes back and fixes lines he's not satisfied with!! How do you teach that? How do you tell an elephant, oh, you missed a spot, and expect it to understand the concept every time afterwards? There's something more there. very intriguing, I'd love to see it live.

Snopes says its legit
